EDITOR,
Squamish CAN is starting a social enterprise, CAN Farm. Located downtown on the corner of Main and Cleveland, the farm will sell fresh, nutritious produce to the community; promote awareness of the human and environmental health aspects of food by creating a space where community members can come together and learn about agriculture, food security and nutrition; address poverty and inequity by employing local residents and distributing fresh vegetables to social service groups; foster environmental sustainability by increasing the amount of local produce consumed; help revitalize the downtown core by establishing a business on a vacant lot and creating a point of interest that brings people downtown when they might not otherwise.
CAN Farm is coming to life because of the support and dedication of community members. We've begun work on site - clearing, hauling, building and planting. This letter is to say thank you very much to all those who have helped and are helping to bring this dream to life. We couldn't do it without your support.
We have so many people to thank, it would be impossible to list them all here, but you know who you are and, if you have spent some time down on the farm during the last month, give yourself a pat on the back and know that you are appreciated. We look forward to the next steps with you.
A special thanks needs to be given to Alpine Construction for their quick and efficient clearing of the farm site. Beautifully done. Also to the District of Squamish for hauling away the debris left after the clearing. This project would not be possible without the generous pledges of support from Squamish Savings, the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and Clasina Van Bemel. Again, many thanks.
Information about CAN Farm can be found on the Squamish CAN website at squamishcan.net. If you would like to be involved, have questions or want to send a comment the address is [email protected].
