Cap U cuts opposed

EDITOR,

Re. "Cap U board axes Squamish ABE program," Chief, June 13.

Capilano University faculty understand the needs of our students and our community and the faculty union will continue to work to see that the decision making process at Capilano respects the knowledge and dedication of its faculty.

There will be multi-year consequences as a result of the 2013-'14 budget, and this is why faculty will continue to ask for a one-year pause on program and course cuts to allow for proper consultation to gather input from students, faculty and the community.

Capilano administration claims that cutting ABE at Squamish will enable the campus to be positioned as a small business enterprise. The faculty contend that although international education is profitable, budget cuts that facilitate revenue generation activities will displace local ABE students, the need we traditionally serve.

Capilano's Board might have approved a balanced budget, but the faculty union is exploring a legal injunction to reverse these draconian cuts. The faculty rejects the notion that the job of planning the future of the university should be solely in the hands of the administration and board.
