Editor,
I am writing, with a copy to Council, in response to the column written by Doug Race (Sq Chief June 27. page A15) regarding the centennial Legacy project.
Once more I raise my ancient face and voice in response to the request for proposals for this centennial project. I, personally, do not have the time, nor expertise to delve into all the criteria needed for such a proposal.
Instead, I am letting my voice be heard ONCE AGAIN for the urgent need for a Community Theatre to be built and managed professionally to accommodate all forms of art in this community
For 40 years music and drama have had to make do with all forms of inadequatevenues (Not forgetting our thanks to local people who have helped us out on many occasions). Brennan Park and the Eagle Eye Theatre were viewed as progress, but as we have grown we need a more professional approach.
I would like to suggest a theatre to be built with proper acoustics, modern lighting and sound equipment where future technicians can learn the tricks of the trade. Comfortable seating would encourage more attendees. The stage where rehearsals can take place and sets left in situ over night and adequate backstage facilities for costumes and properties to be stored would be essential. A screen could be installed to provide a smaller, more intimate venue for smaller productions.
This then would also encourage out of town professionals to perform, stay overnight in our many hotels and drink-in the beauty of our surroundings (on their way to Whistler?). This would be a financial plus.
This town teems with budding artists of all forms anxious to display their talents.
Is there ANYONE who will listen? Unplug your ears, wipe your eyes, clear your brains and ACT. We are here for you.
Doreen M Ramus.
