Copper and Fire heats up Britannia

The eighth annual Cooper & Fire is the premiere summer event at the BC Museum of Mining that hosts visual artists who will demonstrate, display and sell their works as it relates to the themes of copper, fire, mined materials or materials "of the earth."

The event kicks off tomorrow, Saturday (Aug. 7) at 7 p.m. in the historical mill, with an evening concert with musician Joseph "Pepe" Danza.

Known for his accomplishments in the areas of percussion and as a multi-instrumentalist, Pepe will delight the audience with the invigorating sounds of world music. Pepe won the 2009 Jessie Award for best original composition. Joining him on stage will be a presentation by extraordinary fire dancer Laura of Carnival Bon Bon.

Tickets will be available at the door for $15.

Plan on being at the museum on Sunday (Aug. 8) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and take part in a number of fun filled activities.

Featured artists participating in Copper & Fire include metal artists working with copper and bronze, blacksmiths, potters using a number of different mediums, raku artists, glass and copper jewelers to name a few. There will be live music, featuring the award winning Karen Fowlie Band, Pawnshop Diamond, The Roommates and Carolyn Grass and Friends. Also planned during the day are fun activities for the kids and a barbecue on site.

The Squamish Environment Society will holds its monthly bird count on Sunday (Aug. 8) with members meeting at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 7 a.m. The group expects to see up to 60 species of birds including shore and song birds and raptors. A special concert at the Brackendale Art Gallery takes place tomorrow night, Saturday (Aug. 7), at 8 p.m. featuring Smiling Jack Smith. On Monday (Aug. 9), the WOW riders will meet at Canadian Tire at 9 a.m. for a ride to Shannon Falls. Take along a lunch and enjoy a picnic in the park. For more information call Shirely at 604-898-5715.

Parents are reminded that there is no registration for Storytime this month as all programs will be drop in until Aug. 29 at the Squamish Public Library. The Summer Reading Club for ages six to 12 years is going well, as is the Teen Summer Reading Club.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at Ross and Government Road at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 10) for a Zhiggy's Meadows hike on Blackcomb Mountain. Contact Heather at 604-892-9003.

The 16th annual Brackendale Fall Fair is just a month away on Saturday, Sept. 11 and the committee is already busy with plans. Volunteers make any event successful and if you have a few hours to spare, please call the BAG at 604-898-3333. Pick up your exhibit entry tags and category list at the Brackendale General Store and at Squamish Savings.

On Thursday (Aug. 12) the Tantalus Seniors Walking Club will meet at 10 a.m. at Fisherman's Entrance at access to the Spit Kike for a Woodpecker Trail walk. For more information contact Joyce at 604-898-5594.
