Two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken fillets, two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and the Colonels special sauce.
No, its not a special last meal request from a death row inmate, its the brand new Double Down sandwich from KFC, which has recently become available in Canada after a successful launch in the United States.
Clocking in at approximately 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and a whopping 1,430 milligrams of sodium, the Double Down could very well lead you on the path to a double bypass.
According to KFC, Canadians have been begging to see the sandwich debut up north, claiming that 47 per cent of us wanted the opportunity to sink our teeth into this monstrosity.
The sandwich even attracted the attention of the Ontario provincial government, who first said they were going to review the sale of the Double Down but then quickly backtracked.
Its unclear exactly what, if anything, the government could do about the sale of a perfectly legal food product but Im glad the government backed off from their initial stance
As disgusting as I think the Double Down sounds, people should be allowed to make their own food choices (no matter how right or wrong they may be). We need less government intervention, not more, and I think the arrival of the Double Down was a minor victory for those of us leery of big brother flexing its muscles on the general public.
If someone wants to stuff their face with a Double Down, possibly with cheese and sauce running down the side of their mouth, they should have that right to do so.
Government controls so much of our lives and Id appreciate it if they didnt try to tell us what we can and cannot put in our bodies.
However, I do think more restaurants need to let us know the nutritional information of all items on menus and the government should help in enforcing them to do so. For all the unhealthy items from places like KFC, McDonalds and the like, one thing you have to give them credit for is informing customers of exactly what theyre eating.
You often dont find that information in other restaurants and its something everyone should know. Knowledge is power and knowing what youre putting into your body can be very valuable information.
To those of you wanting to sample a Double Down, act fast. The sandwich is only available for a month in Canada.
For me personally, Ill stick to sandwiches that wont significantly lessen my life and actually include that magical element known as bread.
