It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. LaVerne Kindree last week. His many years of practice and service to the community will not soon be forgotten. We were all so proud of him when he received the Order of Canada. Dr. Kindree's memorial service will be held in the Howe Sound Secondary School on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. Donations to the Squamish Health Care Foundation would be much appreciated and all funds will go towards a new CT scanner for the Squamish Hospital. Sincere sympathy is extended to Norma Kindree and all family members.
Bring the family out to Brennan Park Recreation Centre Saturday (Oct. 3) to celebrate Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. Brennan Park is hosting the event as part of a nationwide celebration supported by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). There will be lots of fun to be had, including access to a bike skills park and BMX park, a chance to explore the Logger Creek Trail, Nature Trail, Corridor Trail and the Discovery Trail, and a free barbecue.
The Squamish Environmental Conservation Society will meet on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 8 a.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company and from there will conduct the monthly bird count (please note new time). Breastfeeding Challenge 2009 will take place at the Howe Sound Women's Centre tomorrow (Oct. 3) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The challenge is to set the record for the most children breastfeeding simultaneously at 11 a.m. local time in a set geographic area - a province, territory or state and country (U.S. and Canada) as a percentage of birth rate. Join other mums and babies, have fun and win some door prizes.

The Hilltop House Support Society will hold its monthly meeting at Hilltop on Thursday (Oct. 8) at 9:30 a.m. and new members are always welcome. Following this meeting, the annual general meeting will be held with the election of officers.

Mental Health Awareness Week is being observed from Oct. 4 to Oct. 10. Squamish Mental Health & Addictions will be presenting on stress and stress management techniques at Gelato Carina on Wednesday (Oct. 7) at 6 p.m. Mental health staff will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. to provide information on programs and services offered by your local mental health office and to answer questions from the public. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.

On Oct. 1 the Squamish Community Foundation generously donated $2,000 towards outfitting the Wilkie building.

The Squamish Needy Animal Foundation (SNAF) will be holding "Twoonie" dog walks every Friday at 1 p.m. starting on Oct. 9. Meet on the road above the Dog Pound and please take $2, a leash and remember the "poop" bags. There will be a draw for some prizes at the end of the walk.
