It is sponsored by the Vertical Reality Sports Store and is held outdoors on Sunday (Aug. 14) at 37835 Second Ave. from 2 to 7 p.m. Take along your lawn chair and sunscreen, but please leave your dogs at home.

The Squamish Environmental Society will hold its monthly bird count on Sunday (Aug. 14) with members meeting at 7 a.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Co. This month, they will be looking for migrating shore birds, including sandpipers. For more information, please call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

Hilltop House will celebrate August birthdays on Wednesday (Aug. 17) at 2 p.m. when Elsie Pullen, Karam Grewal, Edna Payne, Ray Gaumond and Randy Walters will be honoured.

Afternoon tea and scones (with homemade preserves) are being served each Tuesday in the grand, old Brightbill House until Tuesday (Aug. 30) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Donna and her volunteers make it a most enjoyable visit and the cost is just $4 each.

Dawn Green invites you to walk and learn more about the geography, history and botany of this area. On Friday (Aug. 19), join Dawn at the entrance to the Estuary at Vancouver St. and 2nd Ave. at 9:30 a.m. Register at the Seniors Centre by calling (604) 848-6896.

An end-of-the-summer Soup and Sandwich Social will be held at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Aug. 25) at 1 p.m. On Thursday (Sept. 1) a lawn bowling tournament will be held and the entry fee is $5 each. Register at the Seniors Centre. Summer Fitness classes end Thursday (Aug. 18) and fall programs begin on Sept. 6, with registrations now being taken.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers on Wednesday (Aug. 17) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alano Club on Third Avenue. The need is great and on Saturday, Sept. 17, residents are asked to donate non-perishable food items in a door-to-door campaign. If you can help out, please call Susan at (604) 848-4316.

Summer programs for youngsters are available at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Adventure Seekers is for six to nine-year-olds and will run from Aug. 22 to 26. On the same dates, Pirates of Squamish is for the three- to five-year-olds. Register online at www.squamishlive.ca or in person at the centre.

The WOW group will meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. (note different time) on Monday (Aug. 15) for a ride out toward Brackendale. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the corner of Ross and Government Roads at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 16) for a Loggers Lake (off Function Junction) hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

The Squamish Public Library Summer Reading Club hosts a Country Western Party on Tuesday (Aug. 16) for kids aged six to 12. The event features games, crafts and yummy treats. Sign-up for the event is mandatory, and begins on Friday (Aug. 12) at 10 a.m. You can register by phone or in person, and don't forget to bring in your reading record to get updated and be entered in a contest for a great prize.
