'Inspiration' concert set

The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is holding an Inspiration benefit concert on Sunday (Jan. 20) at 2 p.m. in St. John's Anglican Church. It will feature local music teachers, past participants and other performers.

Veronica McPhee, executive director of the Howe Sound Music Festival, said proceeds from this concert will go toward the festival. Admission is by donation.

The Squamish Public Library and Quest University continues their lecture series at the library tonight (Jan. 17) at 6:30 p.m. when Dr. Darcy Otto will speak on The Good Life: How to Lead It.

Another event at the library on Sunday (Jan. 20) is the Slam Poetry workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. and the Slam Poetry event from 3:30 to 5 p.m. One of the workshop facilitators is Squamish's own Mo Lawrence. She came in first place at the Youth Poetry Slam last September. Spectators and participants are welcome to attend.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet on Monday (Jan. 21) at 6:45 p.m. at the Sandman Hotel when Meg Toom will present a talk on composting. New members are welcome to attend.

The January luncheon at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Jan. 31) will have a definite Scottish theme with a Robbie Burns-inspired meal. On the menu will be roast beef (and horseradish), mashed tatties, roasted root vegetable and savoy cabbage. To end this luncheon, everyone will enjoy a slice of Guinness chocolate cake. Please purchase your tickets ($9 each) prior to Jan. 30.

The Rotary 200 Club winners for January are: Ted Prior ($100), Max Saenger ($120), Ray Brickell ($130) and Paul Kindree ($150).

The next Winter Farmers' Market in the CN Roundhouse and Convention Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park will be held on Sunday (Jan. 20) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Squamish Public Library will host the 10th annual Scrabble Tournament on Tuesday (Jan. 22) when you can play individually or on a team of two to four players. You can enter as an amateur or as a more serious player. The tournament runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and the entry fee is $5 for individuals and $10 for teams. Money from pledges goes to fund literacy programs at the library and at Capilano University.

Dakota Hamilton is having a book launch for her new novel Solo Tango at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Jan. 20) at 3 p.m.

You are invited to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 for an Open Mic Night tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 18) at 8 p.m. Singers, instrumentalists, comedians or whatever are invited to share their talents. It would be appreciated if you were able to donate non-perishable food items for the Squamish Food Bank. Also, on Monday (Jan. 21) it is bingo night with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Sea to Sky Singers have started rehearsals in anticipation of their spring concert in April. The choir practices each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in St. John's Anglican Church.
