It's all happening in Squamish this weekend

Our weekend to celebrate is upon us as the annual Squamish Days Loggers Festival runs today (Aug. 1) through Monday (Aug. 5). A new activity has been added this year and it is On The Farm Country Market's Campfire Building contest tonight (Aug. 1) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 1861 Mamquam Rd. The Into the Woods Art Fashion Show is also a first and will be held at the Whistler Stop Boutique tomorrow (Aug. 2) from 5 to 7 p.m. Chairs of all shapes will be carved out of logs at the Squamish Station Mall tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 2) from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Judging will happen around 5 p.m. and all proceeds will go to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada. Don't forget the fun-filled bed races starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow night down Cleveland Avenue.

The Loggers Sports souvenir booth is open for business in the Red Apple parking lot on Cleveland Avenue. Pick up T-shirts, caps and other special items related to this fun weekend.

The Children's Sports and decorated bike contest is a big hit with the kids and gets underway Saturday (Aug. 3) at 9:30 a.m. at the O'Siyam Pavilion Park in downtown Squamish. Take in the Farmers' Market on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Novice and Intermediate Loggers Sports at the Al McIntosh Sports Grounds starts at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 3) and while there, be sure to buy a barbecue beef on a bun as only the Rotary Club of Squamish prepares it. Bingo is a big hit and doors open on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Brennan Park Recreation Centre and is sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Lions Club of Squamish and the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Association. There will be special prizes for seniors as well.

There is a lot of good eating going on during this weekend and the Elks and Lions Loggers Breakfast is not to be missed on Sunday (Aug. 4) at the Chieftain Centre Mall from 8:30 to 11 a.m. You will be well satisfied and ready to find a place on Cleveland Avenue to watch the Squamish Days Festival Parade at 11 a.m.

The highlight of the weekend will be the World Class Logger Sports Show at the Al McIntosh Sports Grounds starting at 1:30 p.m. This year, TSN will be on site to film the show. The weekend ends on Monday (Aug. 5) with a Squamish Car Club Show 'N Shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Cleveland Avenue.

Seniors wanting to go on the West Vancouver Arts Festival and sea walk bus trip on Tuesday (Aug. 6) leaving the Seniors Centre at 9:30 a.m. and returning at 3 p.m. are asked to register at the centre by tomorrow (Aug. 2). This is the last day (Aug. 1) for cyclists to register for the Pemberton Slow Food Cycle event on Sunday (Aug. 18).

The Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue is having its own version of Loggers Pancake (and sausage) breakfast tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 2) at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $3. It is short notice, but if interested, please call Ray at (604) 848-2000, ext. 5004 today (Aug. 1).

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors for grocery distribution on Wednesday 9Aug. 7) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue. Do consider donating non-perishable food items into the bins at our supermarkets, or monetary donations can be mailed to the food bank, P.O. Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, B.C. V0N 1T0.

The Squamish Art Crawl sponsored by VISUALS: Squamish Valley Artists begins Saturday (Aug. 3) and runs until Sept. 22. An opening reception at the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 2) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will also feature the Squamish Nation dancers and the Squamish Academy of Music.

Activities at the senior centre this summer include carpet bowling, lawn bowling, co-ed biking and a bocce tournament on Thursday (Aug. 15) starting at 10 a.m. Also, anyone interested in playing duplicate bridge is asked to call (604) 848-6898. The aquatic centre at Brennan Park Recreation Centre is hosting a swim meet on the weekend.

Next week the Squamish Public Library's Summer Reading Club hosts a Bear Aware presentation for six- to 12-year-olds on Tuesday (Aug. 6) from 1 to 2 p.m.; Worlds Above and Beyond for nine- to 12-year-olds on Wednesday (Aug. 7) from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; and Worlds Above and Beyond for six- to eight-year-olds on Thursday (Aug. 8) from 1 to 2 p.m.

The WOW Riders meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 5) for a ride through the Loggers Lane trails and then to the golf course. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.
