I was born and raised in Squamish, and now more than ever the lack of support, pride and appreciation for our local artists is evident. I read last week’s article regarding Squamish as a canvas for the ongoing Vancouver Biennale art installations. The artists are not only not Squamish locals, they are not even from British Columbia. Three of the four are not even from Canada!
This is not the first instance of non-local artists being commissioned to bring their art to the town. A prime example are the pieces of seemingly ‘abandoned driftwood’ just at the intersection of Cleveland and Buckley, another Vancouver Biennale project, a half-done art installation by some Brazilian artists that cost Squamish taxpayers $15,000.
I know for a fact we have some very talented local carvers that could have done amazing things with those pieces of wood, but alas, there they sit, weathered and grey.
Additionally, let’s not forget the blue trees, another proposed Vancouver Biennale project by another non-local artist. I understand the Vancouver Biennale art celebration is meant to bring international art to public spaces, however, should we not be showing our own local artists support first? Although Vancouver Biennale is partially funding these art pieces, the other funding comes from the taxpayers, and personally I would much rather see that money go to a local starving artist. Squamish harbours many talented people who I’m sure would be honoured to have the opportunity to beautify the town, so why outsource? Have some pride Squamish, support local artists!
