'MINeD' exhibit closing planned

A fall fair naturally includes farm animals, hay rides, a fine selection of entertainment as lined up by Cam Salay and concession stands to please every palate.

The exhibitor tents show the real talent of this valley and this year the displays will not disappoint. Exhibitors are reminded that all items must be tagged before taking them to the fair grounds on Friday night for judging.

The Squamish Sikh Society invites Squamish residents in need of eye examinations to participate in a free eye clinic provided in partnership with Canadian Eyesight Global. The location is the Gurdwara Baba Nanak Sahib at 37947 Fifth Ave. on Sunday (Sept. 9) from 1 to 4 p.m. Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis and individuals of all ages are welcome to attend this clinic. This Thursday (Sept. 6) from 5 to 7 p.m. the Britannia Mine Museum invites the public to the closing reception of the acclaimed MINeD Art Exhibit (on until Sept. 16). This is a series of metal sculptures created by artist Margie McDonald and curated by Krisztina Egyed. Admission to this reception is free of charge.

The Squamish Environmental Society will hold its monthly bird count on Sunday (Sept. 9) with participants meeting at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 7 a.m. All ages are welcome to participate and members said it would be great to have a few younger people to get involved as well. Shannon Falls Retirement Residence at 38225 Third Ave. is celebrating Grandparents Day on Sunday (Sept. 9) starting at 1:30 p.m. Grandparents and their grandkids will enjoy a magician show, tuck into delicious ice cream sundaes and have their photos taken. The Adult Afternoon Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet on Thursday (Sept. 13) at noon when the book Glass Boys by Nicole Lundrigan will be discussed. Also on Sept. 13, Nancy from the library will be at the Shannon Falls Retirement Home on Third Avenue at 2:30 p.m.

They are heading for the stage again in November and a casting call by Between Shifts Theatre will be held for the production Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure by Stephen Dietz tonight (Sept. 6) from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday (Sept. 9) from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sea to Sky Hotel. The casting is for male actors ages 25 to 50 and one other male to play multiple smaller roles and one female aged 25 to 35. The chosen will have rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting Tuesday (Sept. 11).

The Hilltop House Support Society will meet in the old activity room at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday (Sept. 13) when new members would be welcomed.

Paws for a Cause is sponsored by the Squamish SPCA and will be held in Pavilion Park in downtown Squamish on Saturday (Sept. 15) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual fundraiser is co-sponsored by Scotiabank and you are invited to drop by the bank and check out the silent auction items on display and bid on your favourite.

The Rotary Lawn Bowling Invitational and Barbecue is being held for seniors on Friday (Sept. 14) from 5 to 9 p.m. No experience is necessary as this is a fun event.
