Pioneers gather at Railway Park

Broadway or Bust students at the Squamish Academy of Music (SAM) are excited about their upcoming performance of The Little Mermaid Jr. tomorrow and Saturday (July 26 and 27) at 7 p.m. in the Eagle Eye Theatre. In only three weeks, the 42 students ranging in age from six to 18 have been busy preparing for this musical. The Little Mermaid Jr. is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and the Disney film. Grade 12 student Jamie Sweeney said this was her ninth year at the Broadway or Bust and she has worked hard and grown as a performer while having fun. Tickets are available at the Squamish Academy of Music on Second Ave. and at the Squamish Adventure Centre at $7 for students and children and $15 for adults.

Two bus trips for seniors are planned for August. The first is on Tuesday (Aug. 6) to West Vancouver, including the Arts Festival and walks along the seawall. The cost is $8 and the bus trip starting at the seniors centre is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Experience the famous Pemberton Slow Food Cycle on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bike transportation is included; however, participants must supply their own bikes, helmets and water. The ride is approximately 20 to 25 km on paved surfaces. Food will be available for purchase along the route but please take snacks along - just in case. Space is limited and registration closes on Thursday (Aug. 1). For further information, drop by the senior centre or call (604) 848-6898.

All is in readiness for the Family Pancake Breakfast at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 277 on Sunday (July 28) from 8 to 11 a.m. The pancakes, eggs, ham/sausages and coffee/juice are yours for $5 per serving and the hungry man's plate is just $7. This is a great way to support the Legion!

The 26th annual B.C. Rail Pioneers picnic was held in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Thursday (July 18) with 85 retirees and guests in attendance. President of the Pioneers, Marion Payette, welcomed everyone and she introduced members of the executive. G-Van Catering again catered a delicious luncheon.

Rail historian Trevor Mills gave an interesting slide presentation of the Vancouver waterfront in the early 20th century as well as photos of the Pacific Great Eastern (PGE) Railway and B.C. Rail. Many of the early photos were taken by his late father. In the annual raffle, there were four winners from Squamish including Hazel Balison ($500), Roy Crowston ($300) and $100 winners were Frank Immink, Tom James and from Kamloops, J. Rezmann.

The Squamish Fruit Tree Project is still looking for volunteers to help pick fruit from trees that some local residents are unable to do themselves. Volunteers can take some of the fruit home and some is distributed throughout the community.
