What do you think? Have you noticed a big change in the line visibility over the last few years?

It is a common and long-running complaint online among locals—the lines on the Sea to Sky Highway are sometimes hard to see, especially when it rains.

The Squamish Chief polled 216 readers and asked the question: Do you think road marking visibility is a major problem on the Sea to Sky Hwy?

The vast majority said yes, at 73%.

The poll ran from 12/28/2024 to 1/7/2025. Of the 216 votes, we can determine that 116 are from within the community.

(Voters don't necessarily have to provide where they live, so the number of locals who participated is likely higher.)

The full results are as follows:

Yes 72.41% local, 73.15% total
No 9.48% local, 7.87% total
Don't drive the Sea to Sky enough to say/not sure 3.45% local, 5.09% total

The provincial government recently told CTV News that it frequently reviews the products used on highways.

The province paints 30,000 kilometres of markings annually, according to TranBC.

The line markings are retraced each spring. Winter weather, however, can cause “significant wear and tear on pavement markings," the provincial government told CTV.

For environmental reasons, oil-based paints were discontinued by the federal government in 2010.

Results are based on an online study of adult Squamish Chief readers that are located in Squamish. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 6.63%, 19 times out of 20.

The Squamish Chief uses a variety of techniques to capture data, detect and prevent fraudulent votes, detect and prevent robots, and filter out non-local and duplicate votes.
