The Squamish Chief polled 418 readers and asked the question: How supportive would you be of Canada becoming a '51st state' of the U.S.?
Since his inauguration on Jan. 20, President Donald Trump has repeatedly said Canada should be the 51st state.
Our poll ran from 2/6/2025 to 2/15/2025.
Of the 418 votes, we can determine that 166 are from within the community. (Declaring where you live is optional for this poll, so it is likely that more respondents were local.)
The vast majority of respondents, 88%, would not be supportive at all of being part of America.
This echoes what other polls have found.
An Ipsos poll in January found 80% of those who took the survey would never vote for Canada to become part of the United States.
Shockingly, though, three in ten (30%) surveyed by Ipsos said they would consider annexation if offered U.S. citizenship and conversion of Canadian financial assets to American dollars.
