Editor,
I am writing this with regard to the article in the Chief newspaper from May 21 "Bottled water ban supported."
I have lived in Squamish since 1963 and I have real concerns regarding the quality of our tap water.
In the '90s Squamish residents went to council with concerns regarding our water because the lines contained asbestos.
The council was asked to replace these lines but their response was that the cost would be prohibitive.
To this date I believe the water pipes have not been replaced so even if we live in new subdivisions that water lines feeding the new lines are still the old pipes.
It should be noted that last year when there were issues regarding the Valleycliffe water pipes that they had disintegrated to a crumbly mess, how good was that drinking water?
I remember it being said by the construction crew that we have spent the last 20 years ('70s to '80s) putting in these pipes now we will spend the next 20 years removing them.
Is it any surprise that I do not have any faith in the tap water in Squamish?
I find it disconcerting that the whole council unanimously voted for this ban without addressing this issue.
