Time to spring ahead

As I start my column this week, it is snowing out and any thoughts of spring seem to be far away.

As I start my column this week, it is snowing out and any thoughts of spring seem to be far away. Snow or not, remember that Daylight Saving Time officially begins this weekend, so when you retire on Saturday (March 8), do remember to turn your clocks, watches, etc., one hour ahead.

The annual World Day of Prayer service is tomorrow (Friday, March 7) at 7 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church and it is open to everyone. The women of Egypt wrote the service and through the voices of urban and rural, young and older Egyptian women, the World Day of Prayer Committee of Egypt introduces its country on a human scale. Refreshments will be served after the service.

A Lyme Disease Awareness Forum is planned on Saturday (March 8) at 7 p.m. at Quest University. The forum, showcased in an article in last week's Chief that focused on the disease's impact on the Willmot family of Squamish, will feature special guest speakers Dr. Ernie Murakami, founder of the Dr. E. Murakamu Centre for Lyme Research, and Gwen Barlee, a Vancouver-based advocate for Lyme disease victims. A public Q&A will follow the presentations. Admission is free.

The Squamish Environmental Society has its monthly bird count on Sunday (March 9), with members meeting at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Co. at 8 a.m. (PST). The group is not looking for any particular birds but will enjoy listening to the sound of spring from birds in the estuary. If you wish more information, please call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

An InvestRight Fraud Awareness seminar is planned on Tuesday (March 11) at 1 p.m. at the Seniors Centre. The event is free, but please pre-register at the centre or call (604) 848-6898. Please note: Laughter Yoga is held only once a month on the first Saturday at 3 p.m. The Spring Program Guide for all ages is now available at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre and you can register at www.squamishlive.ca

A free knitting workshop will be held at the Newport Market (Gelato Carina) on Saturday (March 8) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and every second Saturday of the month. The session will focus on colour in the round and learning fisherman's rib stitch. Coming up on March 29 is the BYOPP (bring your own portable project) event.

The Hilltop House Support Society will meet on Thursday, March 13, at 9:30 a.m., when new members are welcome to join this caring group.

The Squamish Historical Society is well on its way in the planning for the upcoming 2014 Squamish Culture and Heritage Festival. An information meeting is planned on Thursday (March 13) at 7 p.m. at the Brackendale Art Gallery. Anyone interested in volunteering for the festival, to be held on May 2 and 3, is welcome to attend.

Nancy Warwick from the Squamish Public Library will be at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Thursday, March 13, at 2:30 p.m. with a display of interesting books and novels to residents to check out.

Squamish is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and if you are interested in knowing more about our history, plan to be at the Squamish Library tonight (March 6) at 6:30 p.m. when Eric Andersen, Trevor Mills, Arthur Harry and Glenne Campbell present pictures and stories of our past.

This Saturday (March 8), the Lord Byng Secondary School students from Vancouver will present a concert at Shannon Falls Retirement Residence. Afternoon Tea will be served at 2:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited and there is no charge.

The annual St. Patrick's Day dinner is planned on Monday, March 17, at 5 p.m. at Shannon Falls Retirement Residence. The cost is $12. Space is limited. The Quest University and Squamish Public Library monthly series continues at the library on Thursday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m., when Dr. Neal Melvin's topic will be The Science of Brain Development: from Embryos to Seniors.

Parents interested in learning more about Waldorf education are invited to attend a fun intro session for elementary grades at Cedar Valley Waldorf School this Saturday (March 8) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Join veteran teacher Fritz Bindseil for a lively example of how some subjects such as taught through experience. There is plenty of time for questions. No RSVP is necessary. CVWS will offer Grades 1 through 7 in 2014-'15. There is a waitlist for preschool, kindergarten and Grade 1.
