Lovers of West Coast Modern architecture have a new residential listing to consider.
On Thursday, the property at 5260 Keith Rd. in West Vancouver went on the market for $5.15 million.
Exemplifying classic West Coast Modern architecture, the post-and-beam home was built for the Simmons family in 1961 by Hamish McIntyre. It was later renovated in the 1970s by Russell Hollingsworth.
The front of the two-storey home is more windows than walls, overlooking Gulf Beach and Bowen Island in the background. In the main living area on the lower floor, the windows extend fully from the ceiling to the floor, with a seating area sunken a few steps below the stone patio outside.
While the exterior retains its West Coast Modern character, the interior of the 3,305-square-foot home has been kitted out with contemporary finishings, most noticeably in the kitchen and bathroom areas.
There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms inside the house. Outside is a spacious courtyard area with a Japanese-inspired design, an ideal place to take in the unobstructed ocean view behind.
The home last sold in 2021 for $3.4 million.
Lesser known than some of his contemporaries, McIntyre built several homes of architectural note on the North Shore. Two of them were listed on West Van’s Survey of Significant Architecture.
One of those, the Croll Residence at 3984 Bayridge Ave., was demolished in 2018. The Johnson Residence at 5928 Falcon Rd. still stands today.
