The number of eager voters who have already cast a ballot in the municipal election is higher than previous years.
The total advance votes cast this year was 2,148, according to elections officer Robin Arthurs.
Based on the official voters list, which has 14,111 names in total, Squamish has a 15.22 per cent turnout so far.
During the 2014 election period, that number was only 9.5 per cent, based on the 12,270 names on the voters list. In total 1,162 advance votes were cast that year, meaning the number of early voters has almost doubled.
“We expect a large turnout to General Voting and have added more tables and staff than 2014, but if there are line ups, we are hoping that the voters will show patience and understanding that it takes time to process voters and issue ballots,” said Arthurs.
Advance voting on Wednesday at The 55 saw 730 voters in a nine-hour period from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to Arthurs. Votes were also held on Oct. 13 at Brennan Park and Oct. 10 at The 55.
General Voting Day, when most people cast their ballot, is Saturday, October 20 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre.
