Farmers on Duty owner Felipe Hidalgo’s original plan was to vacation in Squamish for a few months with his wife and six children.
But when the borders were closed due to COVID-19 and their tickets back home to Chile were cancelled, they fell in love with Squamish and decided to stay.
“The eight of us fell in love with this beautiful town, and we started to imagine a way to thank everyone for the excellent reception we had received. That’s how the idea for Farmers on Duty began, and since then, my wife Daniela and I have been working side by side to make this happen,” Hidalgo says.
“We wanted to serve the people of Squamish by bringing them the best quality food, right to their doors to make their lives easier.”
In Chile, Hidalgo’s life was dedicated to producing and exporting organic fruit from Chile to the rest of the world.
He decided to bring that same service to Squamish, establishing Farmers on Duty, an online farmers market to provide healthy food and high-quality organic and no organic fruit and vegetables to residents of Whistler and Squamish, with same-day delivery and fast service. The market is even planning to open in Vancouver for a short-term period.
Farmers on Duty offers several product lines, including grains and nuts, fruits and vegetables, dairy and eggs, cereals, preserves, beverages, bakery, chocolate, snacks, pet food and a wide range of wild products, including B.C.-produced products on a small scale, such as sauerkraut, honey, syrup, maple products and more.
All orders are available with the convenience of same-day delivery in Squamish, which aims to give families more time to do the activities they love without worrying about where their high-quality food is coming from.
“We want to be a part of making families’ lives simple. We know people here really value eating healthy, but shopping can take precious time away from enjoying the amazing activities this town has to offer,” Hidalgo says, adding that this is why they launched a new product called Organic Weekly Family Box, which is a delightful surprise of five different types of fruit and five different types of vegetables that change every week. You can select them in just one click, making shopping super easy and fast.
“We want our friendly customers to feel confidence and trust that our fresh products are the best quality,” Hidalgo adds.
Another goal is to make the delivery service accessible to all by offering both organic and non-organic fruit and veggies and providing free delivery for orders over $39.
“We want everybody to have access to a healthy diet. That’s why we offer free delivery with orders over $39,” Hidalgo says. “We also offer the option to pick up your order, which can be ready in under one hour with no minimum purchase required.
“We’re very flexible because we don’t want to leave anyone out. This SMART pick-up is self-serve and is in the front of our Warehouse located in Queens Way from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.”
