Harmandeep Kaur, 24, had just received her permanent resident card.

A woman who recently moved to Canada from India to further her education, has been identified as the victim of Saturday's murder at UBC Okanagan.

Harmandeep Kaur, 24, was apparently attending Okanagan College, and supplementing her income working security.

It was while pulling an overnight shift at the university on the weekend when she was assaulted sometime before 6 a.m. Saturday.

She later succumbed to injuries suffered during the assault at Kelowna General Hospital.

Kelowna city councillor Mohini Singh says Kaur had just received her permanent resident card.

Singh, who has previously spoken out on violence against women, says she is devastated at this senseless loss of life. In light of the circumstances surrounding Kaur's death, Singh says she wants answers to some tough questions.

"Why was a 24-year-old young woman working the night shift alone at the university? It doesn't matter her cultural background, why was she alone? Even a young male shouldn't be alone," Singh told Castanet News.

"If this person, the alleged attacker, had a mental health issue, or whatever issue he had, why was he working at the university where we have so many young people. How did he get clearance to work there."

Singh says Kaur's parents will be arriving from India later this week to collect their daughter's body.

"Who is going to support her family when they are here, because they are going to be grief-stricken?

"They sent their daughter to the safest country in the world, supposedly."

RCMP did arrest a suspect following the attack. He is still being detained under the Mental Health Act.

Spokesperson Tammy Lobb says the investigation is continuing. Charges have not yet been laid.
