Fun to be had at the Fall Fair

The 15th annual Brackendale Fall Fair takes place tomorrow (Sept. 12) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 15th annual Brackendale Fall Fair takes place tomorrow (Sept. 12) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a great place to meet and greet old friends and neighbours while browsing through the exhibitors' tent or checking out the many vendors and their wares. Kids have fun getting their faces painted, going on a hayride, checking out the animals or participating in the zucchini races. Take in all the musical entertainment that is lined up starting at the noon hour. Tucking into a delicious beef burger or hot dog is a must when at the Fair!

The Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital will have a booth at the Fall Fair tomorrow (Sept. 12) and they will be selling raffle tickets for their Christmas Bazaar. Do drop by the gift shop at the hospital any day Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the Auxiliary always has a display of neat items for gift-giving.

Community Registration Day is Sunday (Sept. 13) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when community groups and sports organizations are offered a one-stop information and registration day at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Also, an outdoor gear and equipment swap is being held at the same time at the centre.

The Squamish Public Library invites the community to attend a free public lecture on Thursday (Sept. 17) at 7 p.m. given by Dr. David Helfand, President of Quest University, Canada and Chair of the Astronomy Department, Columbia University, New York. Dr. Helfand's lecture is entitled "Our Place in Space and Time: A Grand Tour of the Cosmos."

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers on Wednesday (Sept. 16) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue. Donations of fresh fruit and vegetables for the hampers are much appreciated. Please deliver at this location by 9 a.m.

The WOW riders won't be meeting next week as many members of WOW will be on a week-long trip to the White Rock area. If you wish more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

Squamish Branch No. 70 Senior Citizens Association of British Columbia will meet for a potluck luncheon on Tuesday (Sept. 15) at noon at the Squamish Manor on Third Avenue. This will be followed by the business meeting at 1 p.m. For more information, please call June at 604-892-1574.

On Tuesday (Sept. 15) the Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the corner of government and Ross Road at 8 a.m. The group will travel up the Duffey Lake Road to the Joffre Lakes area for a hike. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

The Sea to Sky Singers are back to weekly rehearsals again in preparation for their Christmas Concert in Dec. Director Veronica McPhee and Accompanist Colleen Koop invite newcomers to join the choir and rehearsals are held each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in St. John's Anglican Church. The Healthy Brain Program, an innovative approach to the care of the brain was held each month until June. On Tuesday (Sept. 15) from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the group will continue with the subject being Mental Activity. This free program is open to everyone and will be held in the Squamish Public Library. On Thursday (Sept. 17) at 10 a.m., the Tantalus Walking Club will walk around Cat Lake and participants are asked to meet before the bridge to carpool to the campsite. There is one hill to climb during this outing. For more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.

The Squamish Public Library is pleased to announce two alternate language storytimes starting this Fall. The library is offering a French storytime on Tuesdays from 7 to 7:30 p.m. and a Japanese storytime on Saturdays from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and there is no registration required to participate. They begin the week of Sept. 14 and follow the regular storytime schedule.

A busy weekend is in store for those who participate in the annual ARTWALK as presented by the Squamish Valley Artists Society. The Artwalk is on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20 from 11 a.m. to 4:39 p.m. and a guide and map will be available. The Squamish Environmental Conservation Society will hold its monthly bird count on Sunday (Sept. 13) with participants asked to meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company at 7 a.m. There are over 70 species of birds in the estuary and as Fall is in the air, many will begin migrating south. Seniors are requested to attend the meeting at the new Squamish Seniors' Centre on Wednesday (Sept. 16) at 1 p.m. when the new Squamish Seniors' Centre Advisory Board will be formed. Also, please go to the Brennan Park Recreation Centre to have yoru photos taken for the new membership cards and it would be appreciated if you would fill out the Membership Program Survey for the new Centre.

The Squamish Hospice Society is offering a six-week facilitated group for those experiencing loss through death.
