A special event is happening at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Sept. 6) when GrassRoots Jam celebrates its 5th Anniversary starting at 7:30 to 10 p.m. Five years ago, musicians Carolyn Grass, Paul Borchert and Paul Coulter-Brown approached Thor Froslev at the Gallery about the possibility of meeting there once a month. Thor was happy to accommodate local musicians and as well, he said there would be no charge for the monthly event. On Sunday night, Thor Froslev will be honoured with a presentation and as well, a special anniversary cake and of course, lots of great music! Everyone is invited to attend.
Calling all new parents. The Squamish Public Library will be hosting a party for all the babies born in the last year. All families with little ones are welcome to attend this event, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. Join the staff for a storytime, a tour of the library, refreshments and an opportunity to meet other new parents. The Introduction to Seniors' Keep Well Exercise program will be held in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Tuesdays only starting on Sept. 8 to 29 and will be held in the junior lounge. The classes will move to the new Squamish Seniors Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Oct. 6 to Dec. 17. Sacha Molby will be the instructor with assistance on attendance etc. from volunteers Mary June Wyndham and Margaret Taylor. Mary June and Margaret also give their time to the Senior's Keep Well program on Mondays and Wednesdays and it is much appreciated.
Fetal Alcohol Awareness Day is on Wednesday (Sept. 9) during which an education campaign including a "wheel-of-misfortune" game, stickers, pins, prizes and more, will take place at Wal Mart. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) affects approximately 9 in every 1,000 infants born in Canada. It is found in all economic and racial groups. Prenatal exposure to alcohol is one of the leading causes of preventable birth defects and developmental delays in Canada and most countries in the world. A Howe Sound Secondary School reunion for the class of 1968-69 will be held at the Sea to Sky Hotel this weekend. A warm welcome is extended to those coming from Australia, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and other parts of the world to reunite with fellow students from Squamish.
The annual Brackendale Fall Fair would not be possible without the many volunteers who give of their time and expertise. Help is needed for setting up at the grounds on Wednesday (Sept. 9), exhibitor judges are required on Friday night, Sept. 11 and on Fair Day, Sept. 12, a variety of jobs are available. PAWS for a Cause Walk sponsored by Scotiabank and the BCSPCA will be held across the province on Sunday, Sept. 13. Want to have your first look at the new Squamish Seniors Centre? Then plan on attending the annual general meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. when the Squamish Seniors Centre Advisory Board will be formed. The current Board of Directors from the Tantalus Seniors Centre will conduct the meeting as they transfer their responsibilities to the new Seniors Centre Advisory Board. New to Squamish! The Sound Youth Chorus is holding auditions for a new community a capella youth choir for girls ages 13 - 18 years old on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Auditions and rehearsals will be held at the Squamish Arts Council Building (located in Pavilion Park on Cleveland Ave). Rehearsals will be Sundays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. No experience necessary, but a high level of commitment is expected. This choir is directed by Kelly Coubrough.
