Having trouble sticking to a budget while living a healthy lifestyle?
Squamish Climate Action Network (CAN) is hosting a day devoted to learning how to cook healthy meals on a budget followed by a movie about the importance of Dirt.
"Squamish CAN's food group has been participating in local food forums that are made up of various groups that work directly with food security and the connection between people and access to food," said Squamish CAN food group co-ordinator Krystle tenBrink.
"The food forums have discussed what some of the gaps in our system are and one was the lack of basic cooking skills that people have."
With that in mind, the Squamish CAN food group decided to host an event to start closing some of the gaps that exist in Squamish.
Squamish CAN member Emily Smallwood will instruct the cooking session for the full three-course dinner designed as a fun but educational event to learn some basic cooking skills, get advice on budget and healthy shopping and eating, and cook a complete meal on a budget.
The meal event is free to attend but does require an RSVP.
"The dinner portion is geared towards people that would like to learn some basic cooking skills - from following recipes to measuring to cooking," said tenBrink. "However, it can also be an opportunity for people that have existing cooking skills to share with others.
"Our focus is learning how to cook a healthy, nutritious and economically conscious meal."
Daycare will be provided for the dinner portion and the second portion of the evening, which includes a screening of the movie Dirt, requires no RSVP.
Best Film for the Future, Green Documentary and Best Documentary winner in competitions across the globe in 2009, Dirt tells a story about humans and their relationship with living dirt.
"This is Earth's most valuable and under-appreciated source for food, life and shelter," said tenBrink. "The movie brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that soil has."
Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and the movie showtime is 7 p.m. For the dinner portion RSVP to [email protected].
"We want this evening to be an opportunity for everyone to learn something no matter their existing knowledge about cooking or 'Dirt,'" said tenBrink.
