Homeless can now drop in all week

Effective Tuesday (Sept. 1) the Helping Hands Society drop-in facility will be open seven days a week. With the extended hours, more volunteers are needed to share their hands with Helping Hands.

Anyone willing to pitch in any weekday or weekend between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. is asked to drop by and talk to a staff member at 37930 Third Avenue, call 604-815-4984 or email [email protected]. Donations of food, clothing, cleaning supplies and household items are always appreciated.

All Squamish area schools will open one week earlier this year on Monday (Aug. 31) and motorists are reminded of the speed limits in the school areas and to also watch for youngsters crossing the road near schools.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers on Wednesday (Sept. 2) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alano Club on Third Avenue. Donations of fresh vegetables and fruit are always appreciated and can be dropped off on Wednesday by 9 a.m.

Storytimes at the Squamish Public Library have wrapped up for the summer and will resume on Sept. 14. Sign-up for these fall sessions will start after Labour Day on Sept. 8 at noon. For more information about these and other free programs visit the website at http://squamish.bclibrary.ca.

On Monday (Aug. 31) the WOW riders will meet at the Adventure Centre before 9 a.m. for carpooling to North Vancouver. The group will ride from Park Royal to Yaletown. For more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

There is good news for seniors who have signed up for the Seniors Keep Well Exercises to start in the new Squamish Seniors Centre on Oct. 5. A short program will be held in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre starting on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to noon and each Monday and Wednesday until Sept. 30. The cost for this program including tax is $11 with Sasha Molby as our instructor. Please register at Brennan Park.

Carpet Bowling for seniors will be held in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Sept. 14, 21 and 28 and then move to the Seniors Centre in Oct.

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the corner of Government and Ross Roads on Tuesday (Sept. 1) at 9 a.m. for an Alexander Falls and Callaghan Lake hike. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Plans are well underway for the annual Brackendale Fall Fair on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibitor category entry tags are available at the Brackendale General Store and both Squamish Savings locations.

The Howe Sound Women's Centre is sponsoring a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. This event and fundraiser is a march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Sign up to sponsor this walk as a registration and general pledges can be made by calling the Women's Centre at 604-892-5748.

The Community Registration Day will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
