A longtime Squamish resident recently had his legendary facial hair removed as the first step in an effort to raise awareness and money to fight prostate cancer in men.
Willie Lewis, owner of Beaver Motorcycle Repair, on Friday (Nov. 1) said he decided to participate in Movember, a fundraiser and awareness-raising campaign of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of B.C.
During November, men are being encouraged to grow mustaches as a way to raise money for the foundation and to encourage men to get regular prostate check-ups. On Friday, Melissa Walkey of Concrete Blonde Studio on Glenalder Place shaved off Lewis' beard and mustache so that he could start growing a mustache for Movember.
"We want people to get on the bandwagon," Lewis said during a visit to the Chief office with friend and fellow Movember backer Morgan Newton. "It's more about awareness than anything; sooner or later we're all going to encounter some form of cancer and we need to do what we can to fight it."
Newton said those who can't grow a mustache for Movember are encouraged to donate to participants. Proceeds will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of B.C. Those wishing to donate to Lewis' cause may do so by visiting Beaver Motorcycles at 40330 Government Rd., Bay D (near Greg Gardner Motors) or Lisa Brickell at Sea to Sky Community Services, 38144 Second Ave.
