A group of artists from the Sea to Sky Corridor has banded together to provide a unique glimpse at some of the best work in the area.
The travelling art exhibit, titled Our Sea to Sky, features the art of 43 visual artists from Squamish, Lions Bay, Bowen Island, Whistler and Pemberton.
The paintings, sculptures, photography and jewelry will be on display at the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue from Sept. 24 to Oct. 15.
Each artist depicts the Sea to Sky Corridor in a different way through a variety of mediums, most often through landscape painting. Fifteen artists from Squamish are taking part.
“This is one step toward more collaboration between arts councils,” said Elena Whitman, presidents of the VISUALS society, which is working with the Sea to Sky Arts Council Alliance to co-host the show. “It’s a great chance for these artists to have their work in different galleries and for exposure to people from different communities.”
The exhibit has already travelled to Bowen Island and Whistler before stopping in Squamish.
“Their artwork adheres to the theme of Our Sea to Sky but it’s open to the interpretation of the artist on how to reflect the region in some distinguishable way,” said Whitman. “Most of the artwork are landscapes because we’re surrounded by great nature and beautiful spots that inspire the artists.”
An opening reception, featuring live painting, is taking place on Oct. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. to coincide with the Multicultural Festival, organized by the Squamish Welcome Centre.
“I’m sure that this exhibition will add to the celebration of diversity within the community,” said Whitman, adding that a number of the artists will be on site to answer questions from anyone who stops by.
This is the first time VISUALS is hosting a travelling art exhibit in Squamish.
VISUALS, the Squamish Valley Arts Society, is a non-profit fellowship of visual artists in the area.
The organization supports the development, education and promotion of Sea to Sky artists. The Squamish-based volunteer group creates mentoring and networking opportunities for artists to share their knowledge and expertise, assisting in the development of professional business, marketing and sales skills.
