Whippets race at Brennan Park

Plan on being at Brennan Park tomorrow (Aug. 28) and Sunday (Aug. 29) for the North American Whippet Racing Association (NAWRA) and the National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA) competitions starting at 8:30 a.m. on both days.

Eric Andersen presents slides on early landscape painters who visited the Squamish area, from 1888 to 1920s. The UpStares Gallery on the corner of Cleveland and Victoria hosts the presentation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 2). Admission is by donation with proceeds going toward high quality prints of early paintings of Squamish and Northern Howe Sound for permanent local display.

Last week a Peakpotentials training camp was held in Squamish with over 327 participants from all over Canada and the United States. The camp was called Mind of Steel and Heart of Gold and it was all about doing random acts of kindness. Were you like me who received lots of hugs? They said it was wonderful offering their hearts to a community who had opened their arms to them.

The WOW group is asked to be at the Adventure Centre before 9 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 30) for carpooling to Sprout Lake in Burnaby. Eleanor will lead this ride to Science World.

On Sunday (Aug. 29) Rhoda O'Grady will lead the last walk of the Squamish Estuary Introductory Walk series. This will be a sharing walk based on your questions and observations. Please meet for a 10:30 a.m. start at the yellow gate on the windsurfing spit. This walk series will end at the Chelem Trail where it began. For more information please contact [email protected].

The Over the Hill Hikers are headed for the Cypress Ski area for a hike on Tuesday (Aug. 31) and members are asked to meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Is there anyone in the Arts Council community who would be interested in judging the Arts and Crafts section at the annual Brackendale Fall Fair on Saturday, Sept. 11? This would include child, junior teen and adult categories. For more information please call Fran at 604-898-5102.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute groceries at the Alano Club on Third Avenue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 1).

The Gift Shop at the Squamish Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is run by members of the Women's Auxiliary to the Hospital. There are a number of new items in the shop including many items for babies and toddlers, and also cotton nightgowns, knitted slippers and colourful pashmina scarves for women. There is a good selection of ornaments, wind chimes and cards for all occasions. Did you know, there is no HST tax on items in the shop?

The Tantalus Seniors' Walking Club will meet at the Valleycliffe Mall for a walk to the Stawamus River on Thursday (Sept. 2) at 10 a.m. If you wish more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.

Project Love is much appreciative of the support given by the community towards donations for backpacks for boys and girls filled with school supplies, as well as purchasing clothes and shoes at a cost of $75. The fall program guide from Brennan Park Recreation Centre is available and fall registrations are now being taken. You can register online at squamishlive.ca or in person at the centre or by calling 604-898-3604.

The annual BC Rail Pioneers bus trip to Reno is set for Oct. 23 for seven days and there are still seats available. For more information, please call Gordon at 604-892-3252. If thinking of going on the trip, remember you need to have a passport.

The Farmer's Market is a popular place to be each Saturday. Tomorrow, Saturday (Aug. 28) the street theme will be a tomato festival, including tomato tossing, a tomato gallery and salsa dancing.
