Recorders not just for kids

Entertainment

Locals will have a chance to see just how far the childhood musical instrument, the recorder, can be taken during the Brackendale Art Gallery performance Tutti Flutti Sunday (May 29).

The recorder group, or "consort", lead by Dale H. Warr will perform a matinée of classical pieces at the Brackendale Art Gallery at 3 p.m. A bass, alto, soprano and tenor recorder will accompany guitarist Ron Swanson and soprano singer Marlene Boeltz-Nagata performing pieces by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Handel, Pachelbel and Purcell. The group will also present the premiere performance of a Scottish piece arranged by local composer Patrick McCrum.

"I finished the arrangement about a month ago," said McCrum. "I've known Dale for over 30 years and when he told me he wanted to perform here I suggested he try this and he was very enthusiastic."

McCrum was drawn to the Scottish song Eriskay Love Lilt and thought: "Why shouldn't I make my own arrangement for recorders?"

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10.
