The community is invited to the second annual Heels and Wheels celebration commemorating past District of Squamish councillor Ray Peters, his indefatigable spirit, and his love of nature, community and people.
On Sunday (April 15), Peters' friends, neighbours and admirers will collect at the Don Ross Secondary School grounds for a trail work party, a walk/run/bike celebration and a community barbecue.
"The event is a gathering - a celebration of trails, nature and all that is good about Squamish," said friend and event organizer, Bob Brant. "It's meant to be a get together for the community and for families to walk, run or ride together."
The event marks one year since the beloved community member passed away from cancer.
"Ray was one of a kind, tireless, active and involved," said Brant. "He was a member of the last two councils, and by the nature of the person that he was, he brought a dynamic to the council that involved his energy - and he made things happen."
Peters' dedication to the trail network made an impact on the community, and his legacy continues through the trails he helped create. "He had the vision, commitment and a work ethic that brought this major project to fruition," said wife, Anne Peters. "His spirit and energy live."
One of the last projects Peters worked on was the Cheekye Fan Trail, now named the Ray Peters Trail.
Peters passed away before the trail was completed, and the last connection of the 8-km trail to Highway 99 was finished with the help of the Capilano College Outdoor Recreation Program and the Squamish Trails Society.
"Those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him through work and play can understand his ability to be passionate about common respect and good for self and community," said Anne.
Organized by the STS, Squamish Triathlon and Test of Metal, Heels and Wheels is important to the community, said STS member Shawn Gosnell.
"Not only do many people in Squamish use the Ray Peters Trail, but its presence, and our commitment to it helps to reduce the threat of development," he said.
The day begins at 10 a.m. with a trail work party, and at 2 p.m. a community walk/run/bike celebration will take place on the Ray Peters Trail. The day wraps up with a barbecue at Don Ross Secondary at 4 p.m.
Participants are asked to bring work supplies, utensils and a portable chair if desired, as well as favourite barbecue dishes, a potluck salad or dessert.
For information about the work party, contact Shawn Gosnell, 604 898-2015, or Bob Brant for general information, 604 898-4698.
