For those who start to get twitchy when they’re not able to get out on two wheels in the middle of winter, help is on the way.

The District 99 indoor bike park slated for the Sea to Sky Business Park cleared one of its last bureaucratic hurdles when it was granted its land development permit at council on July 28.

“We’re stoked to be at this stage and can’t wait to get it open,” said Chris Sutton, CEO of Select Evolution, the company behind the park.

The park will be at the intersection of Discovery Way and Pioneer Street.

The layout of the 30,000-square-foot space is still being sorted out with athletes and sponsors, but District 99 will include an array of features such as dirt jumps, an air bag, a Resi Ramp, pump tracks and drops, Sutton said.

“We are still at the early stages, but this is shaping up to be an amazing project with some great possibilities for rider development,” said Dan Harmon, development manager with Select Evolution. “It will be another great place for locals and visitors alike to ride and train.”

The park, which will be opened by next summer, will have high ceilings and a range of features for bikers of every age and ability, according to Harmon.

Jeff Cooke, president of the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association, said he is supportive of the project.

“Anything bike related that promotes biking is always going to be great for our community,” he said.

This is Whistler-based Select Evolution’s first indoor park in North America; it is also currently building a 900-acre adventure park with a downhill bike course in Christchurch, New Zealand.
