Special to The Chief

The Mountain Linux User Group (www.mountainlinux.ca) is forming in the Sea to Sky Corridor, centered in Squamish. Its first meeting will be held on April 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Squamish Hotspot (38027 Cleveland Ave).

If you have heard the terms "Linux" or "open source" and wondered what in the heck they meant, drop on by. If not, then here's some questions to help you decide if you should attend this meeting.

Do you use computers at home or at work? Do you spend a ridiculous amount of money on operating systems (the program that runs your computer, like Microsoft Windows or Apple's OS X) and software? Are you tired of your computer and/or software crashing regularly? Are you tired of being repeatedly wiped out by the virus of the week? Are you looking for a better way to use computers? Do you like to explore new technologies with like-minded people?

A Linux User Group, or LUG, functions as an educational meeting of minds around Linux. LUGs tend to host speakers on topics that interest the members. They host "installfests" where people can bring in computers and get help with installing Linux. They also serve as networking points for those who might need help from fellow users, might need to hire Linux professionals, and in general for those who enjoy the community feeling surrounding Linux and open source.

So whether you're a complete newcomer, a beginning hobbyist, an amateur guru, or a Linux professional, drop on by and say hello. All ages welcome. For more information, send an email to [email protected] or visit the Web site mentioned above.
