What’s in a name?
For Hustle Basketball, formerly known as Hoop Reel, it’s a chance to “better reflect their mission of building a sense of family through the game of basketball.”
The newly renamed organization is rooted in the belief that basketball is more than just a sport—it’s a way to strengthen bonds and uplift the community.
“Hustle Basketball is here to serve the youth of the Sea to Sky,” said Mike Wheaton, the director of Hustle Basketball in an email to The Squamish Chief.
This year’s "Hoops for Hampers" event is scheduled for Dec. 6 at Don Ross Middle School.
The parent versus child game raises funds for PearlSpace, a local organization dedicated to supporting families in need, particularly during the holiday season.
"Last year we raised almost $8,000 helping 12 families have an amazing Christmas and later in the year we bring grocery cards in to help when the giving season ends,” added Wheaton.
“It is a super fun way to come out and support PearlSpace. We have some amazing sponsors for the event,” said Wheaton.
The decision to rebrand highlights the organization’s focus on what it calls the "3Cs":
-
Commitment: Encouraging players and coaches to hold each other accountable and show up ready to work.
-
Culture: Fostering an environment where effort, energy, and learning from mistakes are valued.
-
Community: Building a sense of family on and off the court, with a focus on making a positive impact.
