After sitting on the Simon Fraser University board of governors since 2014, Squamish Nation councillor Syeta'xtn (Chris Lewis) is taking on a new role in 2020.
Previously, Lewis served as the deputy chair. Now, he is the chair of the board as of Jan. 15, where he will oversee the administration, property, finances and policies of SFU.
"I'm excited to serve SFU in this new capacity and look forward to working with the board to advance SFU's mission as Canada's engaged university," Lewis said in a press release.
Lewis himself is an SFU alumnus, having graduated with a BA in geography and First Nations studies. He also co-chaired the university's Aboriginal Reconciliation Council, and helped with the Presidential Search Committee last year.
"Mr. Lewis has contributed hugely to SFU over the years," President Andrew Petter said in the press release. "As co-chair of SFU-ARC, he helped to provide a path forward for the university in its commitments to be an instrument for reconciliation and to provide a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for Indigenous students, staff and faculty. I have no doubt that his leadership of the board will assist SFU in further advancing its mission."
Lewis' predecessor in the role is Fiona Robin, who served on the board for six years. She will be honoured at the annual board dinner. James B. Stewart will become the new deputy chair, taking on Lewis' previous role.
