'Paws for a Cause' fundraiser set

Paws for a Cause is the largest event helping animals in B.C. and on Saturday (Sept. 15) our local SPCA and Scotiabank is sponsoring the annual fundraiser. It will be held at Pavilion Park in downtown Squamish starting at 10:30 a.m.

It will be held at Pavilion Park in downtown Squamish starting at 10:30 a.m. with the walk beginning at noon. The day includes games, prizes, silent auction, dog agility demo, micro chipping and Shampooch dog wash. There will also be local vendors and yummy food for all.

Those who visit the Squamish Farmers' Market this Saturday (Sept. 15) will have a chance to take part in B.C. Farmers Appreciation Week celebrations, including the unveiling of a "Market to Farm" project "in which shippers can further explore the farms that they buy from in a farm biography," organizers said in a statement.

Farmers Appreciation Week, now in its third year, "is an important time to reflect on the contribution that farming in B.C. has on all of us and on how we can support those who bring us healthy and bountiful food," organizers said.

The Squamish Farmers' Market runs every Saturday until Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next to Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet on Monday (Sept. 17) at 6:45 p.m. at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Sharon Hannah, author of the popular The Book of Kale, will be the evening's speaker.

The Healthy Brain Group for Older Adults will meet at the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Ave. on Tuesday (Sept. 18) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. For more information, please contact Delores Stewart at (604) 892-6400.

The Squamish Public Library and Quest University Canada Lecture Series continues on Thursday (Sept. 20) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Neal Melvin who will speak on The Science of Sleep. What is sleep and why so we do it? The answers to these questions may seem simple but they are anything but.

It is good to know the support the Squamish Food Bank is receiving and the next distribution day is Wednesday (Sept. 19) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue. If you received a grocery bag with a flyer attached asking you to participate in the B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive, please fill the bag with non-perishable food items and place the bag at your front door for pick up on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 9 a.m. Please call (604) 848-4316 if your filled bag is not picked up by 1 p.m.

The Squamish Historical Society membership meeting is set for tonight (Thursday, Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue. The guest speaker will be Krystle TenBrink from Quest University and she will talk about the Squamish Historical Society Culture and Heritage Fair set for Quest University on Nov. 23 and 24. This event will be an exciting initiative for the whole community.

Many folks at Hilltop House celebrate birthdays this month and they include: Mary Crowston, Gladys Wood, Eva Troeber, Michael Nagy-Deak, Dorothy Zimmerman, Jean Hodgkinson, Marvin Pascal, Clifford Grand, Earl Cannon and Astrid Karwtski. The birthday celebration will take place Wednesday (Sept. 19) at 2 p.m.

The curling season is set to begin and there are leagues for men, women, mixed, juniors and seniors, and new and old curlers are welcome. Registration is Wednesday (Sept. 19) from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Curling Club at 2458 Mamquam Rd. The second annual Wrap-Up Lawn Bowling Tournament for seniors will take place Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. The trophy and bragging rights are up for grabs again! You are invited to participate or drop by to watch. New players are always welcome and the cost is $5 for refreshments and treats. A wide range of fall classes begin the week of Sept. 17 at the Seniors Centre. They include Pilates on Mondays from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m., belly dancing Mondays 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for beginners and 7:45 -8:45 p.m. for intermediates, sitting and standing Tai Chi n Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m. For all classes including folk dance, Zumba, gentle yoga and line dancing, please call Michelle at (604) 898-6883.

Bingo is back at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Sept. 17) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.
