Squamish Days activities abound

Regardless of the weather, the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival is here and today's events include the chair carving contest at the Squamish Station Mall from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and the Bed Races set to run at 7 p.m. on Cleveland Avenue.

The kids are not forgotten as the Children's Sports takes place on Saturday (July 30) at 9:30 a.m. Along with the decorated bike contest and races, the big star is the popular Ronald McDonald and friends at the Stan Clarke Park.

The Novice and Intermediate Loggers Sports Show at the Al McIntosh Sports Grounds on Saturday, is free of charge and is always filled with lots of action. Be sure to partake of the famous Rotary barbecued beef on a bun.

Anyone interested in an evening of bingo? The Giant Bingo night is set for the Brennan Park Recreation Centre tomorrow (July 30) starting at 6:45 p.m. for those 19 years and over. Special prizes will also be awarded to seniors.

Also on Saturday is the Axe Throwing competition at 7 p.m. in the parking lot at the Chances Boardwalk Casino. The Lumberjack Stomp is at Chances starting at 9 p.m.

The ever-popular Loggers breakfast on Sunday (July 31) at the Chieftain Centre in downtown Squamish is ongoing from 7 to 11 a.m. The Squamish Elks and Lions Clubs sponsor this event along with many volunteers.

Take in the Squamish Days Festival Parade coming down Cleveland Avenue from Vancouver Street on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Please take donations of non-perishable food or cash for the Squamish Food Bank who will have volunteers along the route.

The World Class Open Loggers Sports Show begins on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. the Al McIntosh Sports Grounds. Take along your visitors as they will really be impressed by what loggers sports is all about. Tickets are $10 for seniors and children under 12 years.

The pool at the aquatic centre at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre will be open on Monday (Aug. 1) from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Regular hours apply on July 31.

Registrations for fall programs are now being taken in person at the centre or online at www.squamish.ca.

On Tuesday (Aug. 2), the Tinnitus Group (ringing in the ear) will meet at 7 p.m. and anyone interested in attending is asked to call Peter at (604) 898-9775 or email [email protected].

The 24th annual B.C. Rail Pioneers picnic was held at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre last Thursday, July 21.

President Marion Payette welcomed the 107 retirees and guests in attendance. During the delicious luncheon catered by the Squamish Lions Club, the Sea to Sky Fiddlers entertained. Winners of the annual raffle were: Dave Thethi of Squamish ($500), D.G. Cunningham of Fort St. John ($300) and winning ($100) each were: Loretta Jellis and Beverley Lloyd of Squamish and Edith Stephaniuk of Port Coquitlam. Proceeds from the raffle will go to the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital, the West Coast Railway Heritage Park and to the Easter Seals Camp Squamish.

The Healthy Brain Group for Older Adults will meet on Tuesday (Aug. 2) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Ave. For more information, please contact Delores Stewart at (604) 892-6400.

On Wednesday (Aug. 3), the Squamish Food Bank will open its doors for grocery distribution at the Alano Club on Third Avenue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please support the Food Bank by purchasing raffle tickets and a chance to win great prizes from our local merchants.

The Parkinson's Group will meet on Wednesday (Aug. 3) at 1 p.m. at the Squamish Renaissance at 38225 Third Ave. For more information, please call Ursula Dowd at (604) 902-7767.
