While there isn't an organized community New Year's Eve party in Squamish, you can make a celebration of your own, including fireworks, if you follow a few simple procedures.

Fireworks are usually not allowed in town, but the fire chief makes an exception for Halloween, Diwali and New Year's Eve.

They are allowed between 8 p.m. Dec. 31 and 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2024.

But you have to have a permit from the District of Squamish.

Applications for the free permit are open now until 4 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Those interested can apply online.

Note that a copy of this permit must be available for viewing by a member of Squamish Fire Rescue, RCMP or Bylaw officers upon request.

“Consumer fireworks will only be permitted for use on private, residential property.  Any person applying for a permit to discharge consumer fireworks must be at least 19 years of age and obtain written consent of the owner of the property upon which the fireworks display will be located, if the person applying for the permit is not the owner,” the District site says.

The District will post a map showing the number of permits issued in each neighbourhood by 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 31.
