The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is kicking off its 32nd season with some homegrown talent.
Tenor saxophonist Connor Lum will be travelling up the Sea to Sky highway from Vancouver with his sextet in tow for the show on Nov. 16 at St. John the Divine Anglican Church.
While Lum’s mother, a classically trained pianist, first introduced him to music, it wasn’t until he started school at Squamish Elementary that his band teacher, Nadia Sorban, encouraged him to try saxophone.
His first lessons were with a local musician and now-retired teacher Stan Thomson—also on the bill for the upcoming show.
“He taught me the blues scale and introduced me to improvisation,” Lum said, in a release. “I credit him with the beginning of my interest in jazz music. It’s always such a special moment to be able to perform with him.”
Since then, Lum has performed in Vancouver everywhere from Frankie’s Jazz Club to Tyrant Studios.
His upcoming show in Squamish “promises to be an evening of fiery jazz, with a mix of standards and original compositions,” according to the release.
Along with Thomson, Elliott Nicholson will join Connor’s sextet with poet Farrah Theresa adding a mix of spoken word to the evening.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 at https://howesoundarts.tickit.ca/events/26090-connor-lum-friends-jazz-night.
